Why strong foundations in the primary years matter

Almost everything your child learns in high school sits on skills built between Kindergarten and Year 6. Reading fluently is what lets them follow a Science text or a Maths word problem. Knowing number facts frees their attention for reasoning. Writing a clear paragraph is the first step to writing an essay.

When a gap opens early, it rarely closes on its own. A child who is unsure of letter sounds in Year 1 can find reading a little harder every year after. A Year 4 student who never felt secure with times tables often struggles when fractions arrive.

The encouraging part is that primary school is the easiest time to fill those gaps. The work is still concrete, and children are still deciding how they feel about learning.

Why families choose ACE360 as their primary school tutors in St Marys

Many larger tutoring colleges are built around high school and HSC results. At ACE360, primary students get a program designed for younger learners, with the patience, structure and attention that age group needs.

Small groups of 3 to 7 students.

With no more than seven children in a class, your child is never one face in a crowded room. There is time to ask a question, hear the answer, and try again while the tutor watches.

Attention that fits your child.

Tutors get to know how each child learns. Some need an idea shown with drawings or objects, some need more practice, some are ready for a challenge. The work is adjusted to suit.

Lessons cover the English and Maths your child is studying at school, so what they practise with us makes sense in class the next day.

Primary school tutoring programs from Kindergarten to Year 6

Our Year 1–6 tutoring, along with Kindergarten, is organised into three stages so lessons match what children are ready for. Every stage includes primary English and Maths tutoring, and every child starts from where they are now, not where a textbook says they should be.

Kindergarten to Year 1:sounds, reading and early number

These are the years children discover how reading and numbers work. Our Kindergarten tutoring in St Marys keeps lessons hands-on and positive, with short activities that build the habits of listening, trying and having a go.

English

  • Phonics and phonemic awareness: hearing, blending and pulling apart the sounds in words
  • Letter recognition, letter names and the sounds each letter makes
  • Early reading skills, from simple words to first books
  • Early writing: forming letters correctly and writing a simple sentence

Maths

  • Counting forwards and backwards with confidence
  • Recognising, reading and ordering numbers
  • Understanding what numbers mean, using objects and pictures
  • Basic addition and subtraction

Learning outcomes we work towards: reading and spelling simple words independently, writing a short sentence with a capital letter and full stop, counting and ordering numbers, and solving simple addition and subtraction problems.

Years 2 to 3:primary English and Maths tutoring that builds fluency

Around Year 2, children move from learning to read to reading to learn. Schoolwork starts to expect understanding, not just decoding, and Maths shifts from counting to thinking.

English

  • Reading fluency: reading smoothly, accurately and with expression
  • Comprehension: finding information, retelling and working out what a text suggests
  • Vocabulary development through reading and discussion
  • Grammar and punctuation, including capitals, full stops, commas and question marks
  • Sentence construction: joining ideas into longer, clearer sentences
  • Creative writing: planning and writing a story with a beginning, middle and end

Maths

  • Multiplication and division, including times tables, grouping and sharing
  • Mental strategies for adding and subtracting larger numbers
  • Mathematical reasoning: explaining how an answer was found
  • Problem-solving: reading a word problem and working out what it is really asking

Learning outcomes we work towards: reading age-appropriate texts fluently and explaining them, writing organised stories with correct punctuation, recalling multiplication facts, and choosing a strategy for a word problem.

Years 4 to 6:deeper thinking and a confident move to high school

The upper primary years ask more of students. Texts are longer, Maths becomes more abstract, and children are expected to work more independently. This stage builds the skills and habits that help Year 7 feel manageable rather than overwhelming.

English

  • Advanced reading comprehension: inference, author's purpose and comparing texts
  • Vocabulary and analytical thinking: explaining why, not just what
  • Grammar for complex sentences and varied writing
  • Paragraph structure: topic sentence, supporting detail and explanation
  • Essay writing, including persuasive and informative texts

Maths

  • Fractions, decimals and percentages, and how they connect
  • Multi-step problem-solving with clear working
  • Mathematical reasoning and checking whether an answer makes sense

Getting ready for high school

  • Working independently and managing homework
  • Checking and improving their own work
  • Asking for help early and with confidence

Learning outcomes we work towards: understanding and responding to more complex texts, planning and writing structured paragraphs and essays, working confidently with fractions, decimals and percentages, and starting Year 7 with good study habits in place.

Some children need more time with the basics, whatever their year. If your child has fallen behind in reading, spelling, writing,g or number skills, we first find exactly where the gaps are, then rebuild step by step from there.

Work is matched to your child's current level rather than their year group, so they can experience success again and see their own progress. This support suits children who find it hard to keep up in class, have changed schools, have missed time at school, or simply need extra confidence. If your child has a specific learning need, talk to us first so we can recommend the best setting, which is often one-on-one.

Small group or one-on-one tutoring: which suits your child?

Both options follow the same curriculum-linked approach. The difference is the setting, the pace,e and the price.

Small-group tutoring

Price
From $29/hour on a prepaid 12-week term, or $34/hour paid weekly
Class size
3 to 7 students
Pace
Set for the group, adjusted for each child
Scheduling
Set weekly class times
Often suits
Children who enjoy learning with others and benefit from routine and steady practice

Your child learns alongside a few students working on similar skills. They hear other children's questions and ideas, which often helps them understand their own thinking. They still get regular one-to-one guidance from the tutor during the lesson, at a lower cost than private tutoring, with the same tutor across the term on a termly package.

One-on-one tutoring

Price
$65/hour
Class size
Your child and a dedicated tutor
Pace
Set entirely around your child
Scheduling
Flexible times
Often suits
Children with larger gaps, specific learning needs, or who are very shy or easily distracted

Every minute of the lesson is focused on your child. The tutor can slow right down on a tricky concept, skip what is already secure, and tailor every task to how your child learns best. It is a strong option when a child needs to catch up quickly or would feel more comfortable working privately.

Still not sure? We will help you decide.e

Book a free trial lesson, and we will give you an honest recommendation based on how your child learns. You can also combine the two: a small group for regular practice, with one-on-one sessions when a particular skill needs focused time.

Building confidence beyond the classroom

Marks matter, but for a primary school child, how they feel about learning matters just as much. A child who believes they can work things out will put their hand up in class, attempt the harder question,n and keep going when something feels tricky.

Alongside English and Maths, every lesson is designed to build:

  • Confidence, by noticing effort and progress so children can see what they can now do
  • Curiosity, by welcoming questions, including the ones children feel too shy to ask at school
  • Independent thinking, by asking "How could you work it out?" before giving the answer
  • Positive learning habits, like trying first, checking work,rk and finishing what they start

The goal is a child who no longer needs help at every step, and who walks into class ready to have a go.
